Education, Youth and Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, has lauded Western Carolina University for its long and distinguished service to Jamaica’s education sector.
He noted that the United States-based institution has been working with Jamaican teachers and educators for over 40 years.

“In that time, the University has expanded its presence and now offers programmes in Kingston, Mandeville, Discovery Bay, and Montego Bay, in areas such as Special Education, Maths, Science and Early Childhood Education,” Senator Reid said.
He was speaking at the University’s fall commencement held at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston on Friday, October 21, where 22 students were presented with their Masters of Arts degree in Educational Supervision with another 25 receiving their Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
Senator Reid congratulated the gradates, while highlighting their commitment and dedication to their calling.
“Your quest for continued professional development and the development of our young people has reaped its reward; your labour has not been in vain. That is why, along with your families, friends, and lecturers, we salute you. You have persevered and the country will benefit richly from your achievements,” the Minister said.
He noted that changes taking place globally require that teacher training be more focused on catering to the society’s needs and demands.
“Teachers are the bedrock that facilitate learning and development. It is through your efforts that we will see the budding entrepreneurs, the engineers, the scientists, the developers and educators of tomorrow,” he stated.

Senator Reid urged the graduates to continue demonstrating their commitment to future generations, through mentorship, motivation and exemplary leadership.
“Your reward shall be greater, as you work to change another person’s life and build our nation’s capacity through a solid commitment to inspiring, empowering and developing our young people through education,” he said.
Meanwhile, Senator Reid said the Ministry, through the Jamaica Teaching Council (JTC), has opened new avenues for sustained professional development and improved competencies for all educators.
“We recognise the importance of your continuous professional development, just as you have demonstrated your own commitment through the skills and knowledge you have acquired,” Senator Reid said.
He encouraged the various stakeholders to continue to work in partnership to build the nation’s future and secure a better life for each citizen.
