State Minister for Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Floyd Green, says he will be placing much emphasis on supporting primary-school students across the constituency.

Addressing the annual graduation ceremony of the Black River Preparatory School in St. Elizabeth on June 23, Mr.  Green said this is aimed at encouraging excellence among the students.

“As Member of Parliament for South West St. Elizabeth, I want to encourage excellence in education at every step of the way. I believe our children should be encouraged to strive for the best and for greatness and we know they can achieve it,” he said

“It is for that reason, I have decided that I will be establishing a series of bursaries for the students who do very well, so starting this year across our Primary schools, I am going to provide bursaries to the top male and female student in every institution,” the State Minister noted.

Mr. Green said he will also be rewarding the top male and female teacher at the Grade 6 level for the hard work they put in to prepare students for the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT).

He called on parents to ensure that students are doing their work, both at school and at home.

“Parents, you have to help your children in the constant pursuit of knowledge. Oftentimes parents try to direct the children down the path that they think leads to traditional success, but you should allow the children to explore other professions,” Mr. Green said.

The State Minister told the graduates not to be daunted by the challenges of the secondary school at which they have been placed, but to focus on the positives and work hard towards attaining their academic goals.
