Ten students from the Denbigh High School in Clarendon will benefit from scholarships valued at up to $300,000 each.

They will pursue Bachelor’s degrees at the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) this year.

This was announced by Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Michael Henry, during his contribution to the 2016/17 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on June 8.

The Minister said this offering is part of the CMI’s drive to expand its reach to students outside of Kingston.

In addition, the CMI will be offering 30 pre-college scholarships valued at $100,000 each over a two-year period to other schools in the Denbigh area.

Mr. Henry noted that the institute will also extend its pre-college programme at Denbigh High as part of this collaboration.

This, he said, will allow more students to matriculate into tertiary institutions or learn employability skills.

“As the programme develops, it will be extended to other schools, not just in Clarendon, but the wider central Jamaica, including Manchester and St. Elizabeth,” he pointed out.

The Minister added that the programme will be a prototype to be replicated across Jamaica over time.
