Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, is urging past students of secondary schools across the country to contribute to the development of the current generation by establishing education funds.

He was speaking at the official launch of the Munro College Old Boys’ Association’s (MCOBA) Scholarship Fund on April 15 at the Medallion Hall Hotel, St. Andrew.

Senator Reid, who is a past student of Munro, noted that the active participation of alumni in the development and maintenance of these funds is important, as they provide the means for needy students to receive an education.

The MCOBA Scholarship Fund, established in 2014, is financed through donations from past students. It was developed to assist talented young men of limited means at the institution.

It has grown to $18 million and awards bursaries, scholarships and grants to students and teachers at Munro. So far, the fund has disbursed 15 bursaries, seven scholarships and five grants.

State Minister in the Ministry, Hon. Floyd Green, who is also a past student of Munro, commended the association for the generous initiative.

“A fund like this is so critical because it allows students to access quality education,” he said.

Munro College, located in St. Elizabeth, is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year.

A number of activities will be held to mark the milestone including a church service on June 26; football match on September 3.6K run on September 25; and the staging of the 5th Annual MCOBA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on October 9.

A museum, documenting the history of the school, will also be opened.

Between April 20 and November 28, a number of past students will visit the school for career talks.
