Professor Dale Webber appointed next principal of The UWI Mona

The University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellery announced on Friday that Professor Dale Webber, current Pro Vice-Chancellor, Graduate Studies and Research has been appointed principal of the Mona Campus in Jamaica.

He will succeed Professor Archibald McDonald, effective October 1, 2018.

 

The appointment was approved by Chancellor Robert Bermudez, on behalf of the University Council, following a recommendation from Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.

Declaration on Higher Education Emerges from Two-Day Summit

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information’s inaugural Higher Education Summit concluded on Friday (May 11), with production of a ‘Declaration on higher education in Jamaica.’ The document, which emerged out of two days of deliberations by stakeholders at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston, is expected to guide the development of legislation on governance, quality assurance and regulation of tertiary education.

NEI Report Shows Improvements In All Eight School Indicators

THE 2017 report of the National Education Inspectorate (NEI) has revealed that there are improvements across all eight indicators of school effectiveness in the 189 institutions inspected.

University Establishes Scholarship in Honour of Education Minister

The BAU International University in Washington DC has established a scholarship in honour of Education, Youth and Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid. The decision to set up the ‘Ruel Reid Transformational Leadership Scholarship’ was taken by the University to recognise Senator Reid’s lead role in arriving at a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry and the University for the provision of 107 scholarships, over three years, worth $378.2 million (US$3 million).

79 Receive PM Youth Awards for Excellence

Seventy-nine young people who have made outstanding contribution in various areas were presented with the Prime Minister’s Youth Awards for Excellence, during a ceremony held last evening (December 6) on the lawns of the Office of the Prime Minister. Awards were presented in the categories of Academics, Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Protection, Innovation in Science and Technology, International Achievement, Journalism, Leadership, Sports, and Youth Development, and there was a special Jamaica 55 award.
